Episode 77 — LGBT Speculative Fiction Roundtable w/ JoSelle Vanderhooft

Original Art by Dirk Reul; Adapted by Alt Jade Designs

This week’s roundtable is a monster.  JoSelle Vanderhooft, renowned editor of Steam Powered, Steam Powered 2, and many other fascinating collections, joins us for an extensive discussion about LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender) speculative fiction, the reception of LGBT people in the community (and publishing), the political side of things, and, of course, JoSelle’s work!

We hope you enjoy it the episode!

    1. I had trouble tracking down this anime, since I thought it was Simone. Then I discovered it’s Simoun. I bought it yesterday and it should be at my house tomorrow! 🙂

As for sf/f for kids/middle grade with glbtq characters, the best I can come up with off the top of my head is Diane Duane’s Wizardry series. On the face of it, this might seem like fantasy, but it reads like science fiction to me. Unfortunately the glbtq content is subtext — two male wizards who mentor the kids and live together nearby. But kids with gay parents or just gay awareness should pick up on it.

  2. Do you have a link for the Steam-Powered 3 call for submissions? I did some googling, but wasn’t able to track down a website/guidelines, and I didn’t find it mentioned on JoSelle’s website either.

    Thanks! Great show!
