As promised, Stina Leicht returns to SandF! In this episode, we discuss her work in relation to the urban fantasy genre, answering some questions we raised in Episode 93. Stina, of course, does something very strange on air, but you’ll have to listen to discover what it is…
We hope you enjoy the episode!

Hi guys.
I disagree with my friend Stina (can I call someone I’ve not met in person a friend. Oops!).
I don’t think Of Blood and Honey and Blue skies from Pain are urban fantasy because of that strong historical element to them.
Maybe if Stina had written the “flashback” book she originally thought, that would be urban fantasy. But her novels are very definitely historical, and that disqualifies it in my mind.
That’s it. You’re going to be on the show when we do a roundtable on this topic. Period. No choice now.
I’m curious about one thing, though: is it because the story places itself inside a historical moment without actually changing history that makes it non-UF for you? If, for example, she were writing about an Ireland in which the Fae were responsible for some major shift in the political situation, would that make it UF because it detoured into an alternate history? There needs to be a complication added to this frame, I think.
Also: you’re not longer German. I have taken it away from you. And I won’t give it back until you apologize for building better cars and a better democracy.
Thief! Thief! Baggins!
I want to say that since history doesn’t change at all, it stays firmly in historical fantasy. If the Fey had intervened substantially in the troubles…then its no longer historical fantasy. Does that make it UF or something else?
I’ve got to think harder about this. The categories are not as neat as I might think they are.
Oi! I ain’t no Baggins. I’m a Flurklefoot. Don’t you forget it!
And, yeah, you need to think long and hard on all this, sir. We will have you on the show later in the year to talk about Urban Fantasy with some authors 🙂
Oh, just so you know. I’m 1/8th German…
