Month of Joy: Favourite Photos of 2019

Well. 2019 sure was a year, wasn’t it? I must admit I found it a tough one. It was the kind of year that wore me away and built a wall between me and my words. So, I’m going to let my photos do most of the talking. Here are some of my favourite photos I took in 2019. Last January I went to the zoo to take photos with a family member on a special visit with the meerkats. Here is one of the sentinels keeping an eye on things.

2020 Awards Season Eligibility: Our Things and All the Things

It’s that time of year when everyone puts up their eligibility posts for stuff released in 2019. For our show and blog, it’s pretty easy to identify where we’re eligible: Hugo Award for Best Fancast (finalists in 2014 and 2019) Hugo Award for Best Fanzine We may be eligible for other categories and awards, too; it’s hard to keep track. As always, if you think our work in 2019 is worthy of an award nomination, give us a nod. We appreciate your support and love, and we hope you’ll stick around for the 2020 season! Of course, it’s not just about us. Our show and blog featured contributions from a lot of different folks. We’ve listed them here with links to their websites and notes regarding their eligibility for contributions to The Skiffy and Fanty Show or elsewhere. We encourage you to visit their individual sites, as they may release eligibility posts of their own or may have novels, short fiction, and other forms of content for which they are eligible. Here’s the list:

Best of 2019 and Award Eligibility Post

2019: Umm, yeah.  Let’s instead talk Award Eligibility first and then get to the best of 2019. I am eligible for BEST FAN WRITER, for my work at BN Sci Fi (now sadly closed) Tor.com, Skiffy and Fanty and Nerds of a Feather. I write and publish in a number of places, I do wonder sometimes that no one realizes my prolific output because it is all over the place. And of course, quantity does NOT have a quality all of its own. And there are people who do more, and are more. Me, I just plod along here. Anyway, besides blog posts, reviews and the like, I also do podcast like things. I am of course a central member of the Skiffy and Fanty Show, a central member of SFF Audio and also participate in Juliette Wade’s Dive Into Worldbuilding. All three of those are eligible in the BEST FANCAST category.

Book Review: The Year of the Fruitcake by Gillian Polack

Could chocolate somehow bring about the apocalypse? Does a group of middle-aged women hold the fate of humanity in their hands? These are some of the many questions tackled in Gillian Polack’s new science fiction novel, The Year of the Fruitcake: or Aliens with Irony. It’s a complex, fiercely feminist narrative that tackles issues of colonialism, cultural appropriation, and the marginalisation of women.
