Reading Rangers #1: Shards of Honor by Lois McMaster Bujold

Original Art by Dirk Reul; Adapted by Alt Jade Designs

Butterfly in the sky! I can go twice as high! I can’t sing, so just listen to the theme song… but every time it says Rainbow… think Rangers…

Yes, we really ARE that nerdy!

Reading Rangers is our new, bi-monthly (for now) episode series in which we pick a book and then discuss it!  Thank you to our listener, Edward Giordano, for suggesting this many moons ago, because a book club seemed the perfect fit when Paul and Alex found out that Jen had NEVER READ THE VORKOSIGAN SAGA! (booooo hisssss). Clearly, burning Jen at the stake was not an option, so we’re doing this instead. Jen, Paul and Alex are joined by Stina and Kate on this edition of Reading Rangers to discuss Lois McMaster Bujold’s Shards of Honor. In future episodes, we’ll likely have a rotating cast of both new and old readers. The Vorkosigan Saga is about 50 million books long, so it may take us a while to get through it, but when we’re done we look forward to having listener input on what to read next!

We do hope you enjoy the crew’s discussion of everything from romance (or lack thereof) to interplanetary politics, culture wars, pod babies, disability representation, and Machiavellian emperors. It’s a doozy! If you like, follow along at home! Our next episode of Reading Rangers will be all about Barrayar.

  1. I’m a bit behind in my listening so I’m hearing this episode today. I love the series, one of my all-time favorites. Are any of you aware that the hardcover version of Cryoburn included a CD that had DRM-free versions of all the books up to that point. It was included by Baen, and the intention was for people to share them with friends to get them interested. They did that with several of their series around that time. If any of you want the ebooks you can probably find someone who has a copy.

    1. Well, welcome back to the show :D.

I personally was not aware of this, Peter, and I’m sure if the other crew know. Regardless, that is actually really cool and an interesting strategy, to say the least. Do you know how successful it was by any chance? Or is that information we’ll never quite know?

      –Shaun

      1. I don’t know how successful it was. I think they only did it for a few years, in the late 2000’s. Most of the CDs were in books by David Weber, John Ringo, and Eric Flint. Mercedes Lackey and David Drake also have one each. http://baencd.thefifthimperium.com/, hosted by someone independent of the publisher, has all of them available for download, except of course the Bujold.

        1. Thanks for the details, Peter. It’s much appreciated. My guess is they discontinued it because it didn’t produce the results they wanted, whether or not the results were “good.” But you never know with Baen. 🙂
