We’ve been on an epic fantasy track since the start of the year, which means we’ve been living vicariously through the lives of fictional characters! This episode continues the trend!
Michael Sullivan, author of The Riyria Revelations series, joins us to talk about fantasy, anti-heroes, publishing, reviews, and his books (Theft of Swords in particular). Plus, there’s also a little talk about dwarves — why they’re untrustworthy and what you can do to stop them from destroying the kingdom (this last part is clearly false, though dwarves do get mentioned quite a bit).

I was curious if the matter of “that review” was going to rear its head.
Yeah. It was unavoidable. You get a high profile SF/F magazine posting a harsh review of a book by the author you’re interviewing and you don’t bring up the subject of reviews? That’s bad interviewing. I liked Michael’s answers quite a lot. He’s enormously humble about his writing experience.
He is, and it was more productive for him, and you guys, to talk about reviews qua reviews, rather than that problematic one in specific. Good form!
Well, thank you for that, sir!
