The Next Book: The Jumbies by Tracey Baptiste!

As part of our #AudienceAssemble initiative, we’re going to try to be more active on our Patreon page and social media accounts. With that in mind, we’re announcing that our next book discussion will be on Tracey Baptiste’s fantastic middle grade novel, The Jumbies. And we’re inviting you to share your thoughts about it via our Twitter, Patreon page (and its related Discord server), and Facebook! Think of it as a kind of makeshift Skiffy and Fanty book club! You can get the book directly from Scholastic or where fine books are sold. It’s a quick read, so if you want to read along with us and share your thoughts, get started! Welcome to 2019: A Year of New Things (Podcastery, a Month of Joy, and Jen’s Delicious Tears)

2019! We’re finally here. Like you, we’re hoping it will be a good one. 2016 ended rough. 2017 was even worse. And 2018 was sort of like getting kicked in the teeth by the high school bully every single day. Whether you lost a loved one, your government lost its damn mind, or you tried desperately to keep your hopes up in yet another year of trashfires and horror, we know this last year has been just as tough on you as it has been on each of us. That’s why we tried to make 2018 a “Year of Hope.” Hopefully, our podcast was a little beacon of light in an otherwise dark abyss. Of course, 2018 wasn’t all bad. U.S.-Americans sent a message to the alt-right that y’all ain’t gonna keep this country for long. We got a new Star Wars movie (which Shaun says was absolutely kickass). There were some amazing books by old friends, new friends, and folks we haven’t met yet. Heck, 2019 was a year of phenomenal writing of all kinds. Plus, N.K. Jemisin won another Hugo Award (we’re temporarily renaming it the Jemisin is Awesomesauce Award). In a lot of ways, 2018 was a good year.

The 2017 “Inclusion” Theme Begins: Announcements, Details, and Guest/Author Calls

2017 has arrived. It’s a thing. It’s happening. And it’s not the year many of us hoped for. When we first set out to create a theme for 2017, we didn’t know that it would become something more than a broad gesture about what we believe is crucial to the continued significance of science fiction and fantasy. As the months following the U.S. election rolled by, it became clear that our call for “Inclusion” would be a manifesto. It would be one of the ways we each would contribute to making this world a better place not just for ourselves, but also for everyone. “Inclusion” isn’t just about diversity. It’s about hearing people for who they are and recognizing the power of their voices. It’s about sharing those voices as far as this little podcast can so that as many of us as possible are heard in the cacophony of terror and rage filling the airwaves in these opening weeks of 2017. It’s about emptying the jar of silence so that this room we call the sf/f community is alive with infinite diversity in infinite combinations (to quote the Vulcan philosophy). Our mission is resistance through Inclusion. This podcast may not be a Congressman or an ambassador to the U.N. or a prime minister, but we are a voice within a community. We’re going to use that voice to make sf/f a better place. With that in mind, we’re officially opening up our annual “Call for Contributors.” The following is a description of what we’re looking for, what we’re planning to do, and how you can be involved:

Quick Update on the RSS Feed and iTunes (Check Your Feeds)

http://media.blubrry.com/skiffyandfanty/dts.podtrac.com/redirect.mp3/archive.org/download/PodcastUpdateFeedsAndITunes/Podcast%20Update%20–%20Feeds%20and%20iTunes.mp3Podcast: Play in new window | DownloadSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Spotify | Android | iHeartRadio | Podchaser | Podcast Index | Email | TuneIn | Deezer | RSSFolks following us on Twitter may have noticed some concern regarding our two RSS feeds:  the full feed to the blog/podcast and the podcast only feed for iTunes (or folks just trying to snatch the podcasts, not the blog).  This is what happened: We use Feedburner to funnel the podcast to iTunes and podcast directories, and we keep a dedicated podcast feed so these directories only get pinged for media files and not for blog posts (which limits how many eps show up at a time).  A few days ago, I went into Feedburner to update both feeds to make sure the information was up-to-date.  For the podcast, that included an updated description, updated cast list, and so on.  In the course of doing this, Feedburner started renaming both feeds to the same address.  I don’t know why, but it happened so many times in a row that I actually got confused which feed was supposed to have which address. Eventually, I got the feeds corrected, but by then, iTunes and iTunes derivative programs were registering a problem with the feed; at least two people reported that they could download episodes, but could not properly subscribe.  Since iTunes can take up to a week to register changes to a feed, I have no idea if this is a permanent error or if the changes to the feed confused iTunes enough that it’s locked onto a feed that doesn’t exist or isn’t the correct feed.  On top of that, Feedburner now registers a massive drop in subs to both feeds, which may or may not be relevant depending on when it did its last subscriber “catch” and depending on how many people checked their feeds on Friday (the last day Feedburner would have grabbed subscriber numbers).  Either way, it’s weird. I don’t currently have a solution for iTunes or iTunes derivative users.  It may be weeks before I can fix whatever is wrong with our iTunes page (a week to find out if the feed corrected itself and possibly another week to correct any errors that might exist).  It may turn out that all of this is worrying for nothing; the feed could correct itself on iTunes and everything could work out just fine. For everyone else, the feeds should work just fine, though you should probably update your RSS reader or podcast catcher so it grabs the appropriate feed.  If you want the full blog, use this feed; if you want the podcast ONLY, use this feed. Update: Blog and Podcast Feed Changes!

That means there are two feeds:  one associated with iTunes (which is the feed most of you are subscribed to; this feed now only includes media items) and a new feed which includes all content. Why did I do this?  Simple.  The way iTunes works is it recognizes every item in the RSS feed as a “post.”  However, it only adds to its own feed those items which contain media elements.  If we have 3 podcasts and 7 posts over the course of a week or something, it will only recognize the podcasts, but count the posts against the “total.”  This means that our iTunes feed will show considerably less content in podcast form than we actually have.  Why?  I don’t know.  That’s just how things work. And that means anyone who reads this blog, rather than subscribes via iTunes, will have to update their feed.  If you look to the right, you’ll see two RSS feeds (Full Feed and Email) and the iTunes feed.  If you don’t use iTunes (or you use both so you can read the posts), you’ll need to update your feed to the new one there.  Just click the link and update what you’ve got. And that’s it.  Sorry for the inconvenience.  Hopefully it won’t be too big of a deal for everyone. Thanks for listening.  Have a great holiday!
