It’s been a few weeks since the last edition, and as expected, there are more podcasts to talk about! So sit back, get your clicker finger ready, and enjoy some podcast goodness.
Also: if you have any podcast recommendations, let us know in the comments!
Here we go:
- Pat Cadigan! Breaking the Glass Slipper shares an interview panel at this year’s FantasyCon with the cyberpunk great.
- With so many Stephen King adaptations on our screens right now, The Incomparable‘s book club is right to take a look back at King’s The Dark Tower series. Solid stuff!
- If you’re an Emily Bronte fan, you’ll love this In Our Time episode on the publication of Wuthering Heights and Bronte’s life.
- The Agony Column / Narrative Species interviews Annalee Newitz about Autonomous. Good stuff, as always!
- Words to That Effect explores imaginary countries and the Ruritanian romance genre. I just discovered this podcast. It’s wonderful!
- If you’ve ever wanted to adapt your work to the game world, Writing Excuses talks to Alan Bahr, who has done just that.
Movies and Television
- Chuck Todd’s 1947 podcast interviews Chadwick Boseman and Reginald Hudlin about the upcoming Thurgood Marshall biopic, Marshall. I know, you want stuff on Black Panther, but this is seriously awesome.
- The fine folks at Aggressive Negotiations talk through the Mandalorian narrative arc in The Clone Wars.
- On the subject of The Clone Wars, the folks at The Incomparable take a look at the classic cartoon series and its successor, Rebels, with an eye toward the huge fan base for each.
- While you wait for our episode to drop, here are some other folks talking about Blade Runner 2049:
- Filmspotting
- InSession Film
- InSession Film also has a great episode on the original Blade Runner!
- Maltin on Movies talks to genre familiar Elijah Wood about all things movies. This is one of the most delightful podcasts about movies. Maltin is such a movie nerd!
- If you’re in need of some comedy antics about terrible movies, here’s We Hate Movies on Scream 2. *shiver*
History, Conspiracies, Science! and Weirdness
- If you’ve ever wondered why the German economy seems to be doing so well, Freakonomics Radio interviews a plethora of economists and historians to explain. Fantastic stuff!
- NPR’s Hidden Brain explores the science behind our debates about gender. It’s a nature vs. nurture thing. (Warning: this is clearly in response to James Damore’s memo from earlier this year, so some perspectives, though scientific, will edge close to what Damore was arguing.)
- Imaginary Worlds explores the history behind Disney’s The Haunted Mansion (the ride, not the movie). As always, the history is fascinating. There’s also a fantastic episode about Mega Ran and Sammus, two hip hop artists who create music based on their favorite video game characters.
- The Smithsonian’s Sidedoor podcast looks at the history of the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre. A horrific story, but an important one to remember.
- In Our Time has some great episodes about Aphra Behn and Constantine the Great!
- Stuff You Missed in History Class has been on fire the last few weeks. On the more “normal” front, the hosts explore the history of the ill-fated U.S.S Akron, which is a steampunk story waiting to happen. On the more “creepy” front, they talk about the mysterious Devil’s Footprints of 1855 and the strange history of the green children of Suffolk.
- Over at Stuff They Don’t Want You to Know, they discuss the Dragon’s Triangle (the sibling of the Bermuda Triangle, it seems) and the strange conspiracy theories surrounding the crash of the Titanic.
And there you have it.
