It’s been a long time since I’ve posted one of these. Since the Skiffy and Fanty crew collectively listen to more podcasts than there are episodes of our show (totally scientific, promise), it’s about time we brought the Around the Podosphere back to share some of the goodness worming its way into our ears. So, here goes:
Books and Stories
- Over at StarShipSofa, they’ve narrated Tobias S. Buckell’s “Pale Blue Memories,” which was originally published in Old Venus edited by George R. R. Martin and Gardner Dozois.
Movies
- Over at Filmspotting, they have a few things to say about Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Also, in their retro-review series, Top 5 Films of 1984, Adam and Josh get cutthroat about The Terminator. (Shaun may have gotten a bit salty over this one…)
- The nerds at How Did This Get Made? review The Running Man (1987), based on the novel of the same name by Richard Bachman (a.k.a. Stephen King).
Writing
- Over at Writing Excuses, the hosts discuss hybrid outlining and what outliners can learn from discovery writing. They also have episodes on proposals, pitches, and queries AND creating great outlines.
- In her third episode, Kameron Hurley talks about her experiences at Swecon, explains why nobody owns your time, and more writing-related topics!
- The fine folks at Speculate! talk to Jason M. Hough about tie-in fiction and much more.
History, Conspiracies, and Weirdness
- The hosts of Stuff They Don’t Want You to Know discuss the existence of “red mercury,” supposedly the most dangerous “possibly doesn’t exist” substance on Earth. They also interview Stephen Greer, a UFO researcher who is convinced that aliens regularly visit the Earth and the government is covering it up. Seriously, these are both fascinating podcasts.
- BBC Radio 4’s In Our Time has some fantastic episodes on a number of topics you might enjoy, including Purgatory, Emily Dickinson, and the Egyptian Book of the Dead!
- Over at Slate’s Lexicon Valley, John McWhorter explores slang and the Vietnam Graffiti Project (w/ Ben Zimmer).
Science!
- On StarTalk Radio, Neil deGrasse Tyson interviews Jill Tarter (former direct of the SETI Institute) about extraterrestrial life and the search to find it.

- The Audacity to Podcast has an episode on normalization, podcast loudness, and audio standards that any would-be or current podcaster must listen to.
