It’s that time again! The time when so many of us tell you what we created that is eligible for an SF/F award in 2019. And as always, we’re going to tell you about all the eligible things that this podcast and/or its hosts created AND all the eligible things we covered, including movies, books, comics, and more! Who knows what 2019 will bring? It seems as if speculative fiction is at least one area that definitely won’t disappoint us. For the last month we’ve been sharing our joys through our #MonthofJoy posts and BookTube videos, and we refuse to lose sight of those joys as we plow headlong into an amazing year of podcasts, blog posts, videos, newsletters, Patreon exclusives, merchandise, and more! You have been warned! As with every Holiday Special, the crew brings a heavy dose of absurd and downright silly comedy to an otherwise totally normal discussion of film. They list the virtues and miraculousness of eye-liner, tackle some racist fantasy tropes, rip into a few dropped plot-lines, and wander aimlessly through the confusing logic behind the dragons in a movie about Scottish Santa and his almost-Johnny-Depp son. So, you know how the first Blade movie was actually kind of awesome and we all went crazy for the killer daywalker with a badass cloak, giant fangs, and the most country sidekick this side of the Mississippi? Well, if you do, we implore you not to watch this one. Jen, Becca, and Paul turn a humorous, critical eye to the final film in the Blade series, Blade: Trinity. They talk character the new cast, character deaths, the Sumerian demon inspired Dracula, alien dogs, and Parker Posey in pumps. It may be a horrific hodge-podge of unfinished plotlines with representation problems, but it’s not the worst Wesley-Snipes-as-undead-guy-fighting-undead-guys movie that we’ve seen this year… We hope you enjoy the episode!

They discuss the film’s pros and cons, from its treatment of people of color and anti-feminist portrayals of witches to how it deals with toxic masculinity and bullying and more. The deeper they dig into the film, the more apparent it becomes that what should be a simple Halloween romp is perhaps a bit more complicated than they originally expected. Finally, the show ends in characteristic ItW fashion: with a conversation about whether Hocus Pocus will connect with young audiences today. Enjoy!

We turn our drunken eyes to Leprechaun in the Hood, a movie that can be best described as everything BAD about representation with a side of WHY. We discuss how the film approaches representation (of so many different peoples), its absurd take on rap and gang culture, and even Leprechauns. And, yeah, we give some love to Warwick Davis, too.
