Zin E. Rocklyn) to discuss Alex Garland’s adaptation of the Jeff Vandermeer novel of the same name, Annihilation. They mostly talk about how truly terrifying imagery, but they also try to suss out exactly what Garland was trying to do with a certain biological premise. This is rife with spoilers, so make sure you’re ready for it before diving into the the surreal storytelling of Annihilation. We hope you enjoy the episode!

Jen, Paul, David, and Rachel get together to review the film that refused to stay buried in a Transylvanian Salt Mine. They discuss (or rather, David schools everyone) how Event Horizon is a stealth Warhammer 40k fanfic film, the brilliance of a supernatural horror in space, the failed potential of a pretty cool speculative concept, how the film portrays surprisingly good representation given when it was made, but how, sadly, it has some of the most inconsistent science ever seen in a science fiction film (and our last film was Lawnmower Man, for goodness sake). All this and more await you in the Overlook hotel IN SPACE!!! We hope you enjoy the episode!

In this episode, Jen and Trish are joined by Faridah Gbadamosi, Justina Ireland, and Brandon O’Brien to discuss everything from how Black Panther deals with the African Diaspora, how Nakia and the rest of the women are always right, what kind of villain Killmonger is, how the film fits within the MCU, and as much other stuff as we could fit in (given how many important conversations that Ryan Coogler and his team managed to infuse Black Panther with). (Wakanda Forever!) We hope you enjoy the episode!

Torture Cinema #78 — Lawnmower Man: The Director’s Cut (1992)

This is our very first Torture Cinema of the year, and so OF COURSE our Patrons had to pick something that was TRULY terrible! In this episode, Julia, Paul, Alex, and Daniel dig deep into the movie that is so awful and so unlike the short story it was based on that Stephen King successfully sued the production company! Keep in mind that Stephen King is directly responsible for Maximum Overdrive, and he STILL thought this movie was awful! But even worse, the team had to watch the Director’s Cut! Which we’re pretty sure just added an additional twenty minutes of Jeff Fahey having cybersex, but still… You guys get more sadistic every month. Keep up the good work! We hope you enjoy the episode!

At the Movies #66: The Shape of Water (2017) w/ Caitlyn Paxson

In today’s episode, we’re joined by Caitlyn Paxson in a riveting discussion of the much-acclaimed Guillermo Del Toro fantasy, The Shape of Water. The crew looks at how the film examines folklore, its approaches to marginalized identities, where it succeeds and fails, the importance of the color green, and much more. We hope you enjoy the episode!

344. Krampus: The Reckoning (2015) — A Special Holiday Torture Cinema "Adventure"

In this special Holiday edition of Torture Cinema, Shaun, Paul, Jen, Alex, and Becca mix too much alcohol with a really, truly terrible movie. This one definitely comes with some language and content warnings, because the team is just so very angry that they have to watch this. They discuss how a potentially interesting premise is utterly destroyed by an awful, convoluted script, terrible production values, and some of the worst acting that the state of Arizona has ever produced. The only reason we can come up with that anyone should ever watch this film is so they know how NOT to make a movie. Happy Holidays! We hope you enjoy the episode!
