Book Review: CHRISTMAS AND OTHER HORRORS, Edited by Ellen Datlow

Cover of Christmas and Other Horrors: A Winter Solstice Anthology

… [The] majority (even those that might be set around Christmas) are really about solstice, that moment when the sun stops on its journey across Earth’s skies to change course. As many traditions of modern Christmas celebration are really appropriation and secularization of more ancient pagan festivities, several stories could be seen from either or combined perspectives.

Shaun, Jen, and Becca join forces to discuss Netflix’s animated Santa origin story, Klaus. Together, they contemplate the meaning of tradition in a town wrapped up in rivalries and hate, the significance of the Sami people to the story and our world, the film’s joyous treatment of the Santa story, and much more. We hope you enjoy the episode!

Torture Cinema #86: A Special Holiday Torture Cinema Adventure – The Christmas Dragon (2014)

This one is DEFINITELY NSFW folks! Somehow the team, comprised of Shaun, Jen, Paul, and Becca, managed to turn this family friendly film into a total raunch fest. Proceed with caution. You have been warned! As with every Holiday Special, the crew brings a heavy dose of absurd and downright silly comedy to an otherwise totally normal discussion of film. They list the virtues and miraculousness of eye-liner, tackle some racist fantasy tropes, rip into a few dropped plot-lines, and wander aimlessly through the confusing logic behind the dragons in a movie about Scottish Santa and his almost-Johnny-Depp son. We hope you enjoy the episode and HAPPY HOLIDAYS!

At the Movies #72 – The Christmas Chronicles (2018)

It’s the holidays, and that means it’s time to wax lyrical about holiday movies. This year, Shaun, Paul, Alex, and Mike join forces to discuss the brand new smash hit, The Christmas Chronicles. They talk about Netflix’s approach to the holidays, the film’s treatment of Christmas and Santa, the terrors of bad CG, and the cliched sappiness that makes the holidays as good as a nice warm cup of cocoa! We hope you enjoy the episode!

344. Krampus: The Reckoning (2015) — A Special Holiday Torture Cinema "Adventure"

In this special Holiday edition of Torture Cinema, Shaun, Paul, Jen, Alex, and Becca mix too much alcohol with a really, truly terrible movie. This one definitely comes with some language and content warnings, because the team is just so very angry that they have to watch this. They discuss how a potentially interesting premise is utterly destroyed by an awful, convoluted script, terrible production values, and some of the worst acting that the state of Arizona has ever produced. The only reason we can come up with that anyone should ever watch this film is so they know how NOT to make a movie. Happy Holidays! We hope you enjoy the episode!

307. Beethoven's Christmas Adventure (2011) — A Torture Cinema Holiday Special "Adventure"

In this very special holiday edition of Torture Cinema, Jen, Paul, Julia, and Alex put their animal love to the test with Beethoven’s Christmas Adventure (2011).
