The Next Book: The Jumbies by Tracey Baptiste!
As part of our #AudienceAssemble initiative, we’re going to try to be more active on our Patreon page and social media accounts. With that in mind, we’re announcing that our next book discussion will be on Tracey Baptiste’s fantastic middle grade novel, The Jumbies. And we’re inviting you to share your thoughts about it via our Twitter, Patreon page (and its related Discord server), and Facebook! Think of it as a kind of makeshift Skiffy and Fanty book club! You can get the book directly from Scholastic or where fine books are sold. It’s a quick read, so if you want to read along with us and share your thoughts, get started! We intend to record our podcast discussion on the 8th of July. In the future, we’d like to give a lot more lead time on our discussions, so stay tuned for some shifts in communications. Enjoy!
Announcement: Our 2020 (and Beyond) Focus and an Open Call to Publishers and Creators
For the past few weeks, the United States and much of the world has been in the grips of a massive movement of protest and resistance against police brutality and systemic racism, all under the familiar and power banner of Black Lives Matter. To say that 2020 has been a difficult year is an understatement, but while there was very little we, as an SF/F/H podcast, could do about the COVID-19 pandemic, there is something, however small, we can do to support black communities in the world. And so we’re going to do it in the most forceful way we know how. With that in mind, we have three announcements to make:
The Skiffy and Fanty Livestream Event: Podcasting Q&A — April 17th, 3 PM EST
In an effort to join all the lovely folks offering additional entertainment during this pandemic, The Skiffy and Fanty Show has created a special livestream event: Podcasting Q&A! The event will offer an opportunity for fans, podcast hopefuls, and authors and other creatives to discuss the world of podcasting with Shaun, one of our producers and hosts. For an hour, Shaun will field your questions, offer his perspectives on geek podcasts, and interviewing, and otherwise try to entertain you! So, if you’ve ever wondered what it takes to run an award-nominated podcast, what the podcasting world is like, or even what you need to know to participate as a podcast interview guest, then this is event is for you. And if you can’t make the time, you can send us your questions to skiffyandfanty[at]gmail[dot]com OR direct to our Twitter: @skiffyandfanty. We’ll answer as many questions a we can and make the video available for viewing after its conclusion! The stream will begin at 3 PM EST on our YouTube channel (see below). No purchase is necessary (i.e., it’s totes free). Please spread the word. We hope to see you there!
2020 Awards Season Eligibility: Our Things and All the Things
It’s that time of year when everyone puts up their eligibility posts for stuff released in 2019. For our show and blog, it’s pretty easy to identify where we’re eligible: Hugo Award for Best Fancast (finalists in 2014 and 2019) Hugo Award for Best Fanzine We may be eligible for other categories and awards, too; it’s hard to keep track. As always, if you think our work in 2019 is worthy of an award nomination, give us a nod. We appreciate your support and love, and we hope you’ll stick around for the 2020 season! Of course, it’s not just about us. Our show and blog featured contributions from a lot of different folks. We’ve listed them here with links to their websites and notes regarding their eligibility for contributions to The Skiffy and Fanty Show or elsewhere. We encourage you to visit their individual sites, as they may release eligibility posts of their own or may have novels, short fiction, and other forms of content for which they are eligible. Here’s the list:
Welcome to 2019: A Year of New Things (Podcastery, a Month of Joy, and Jen’s Delicious Tears)
2019! We’re finally here. Like you, we’re hoping it will be a good one. 2016 ended rough. 2017 was even worse. And 2018 was sort of like getting kicked in the teeth by the high school bully every single day. Whether you lost a loved one, your government lost its damn mind, or you tried desperately to keep your hopes up in yet another year of trashfires and horror, we know this last year has been just as tough on you as it has been on each of us. That’s why we tried to make 2018 a “Year of Hope.” Hopefully, our podcast was a little beacon of light in an otherwise dark abyss. Of course, 2018 wasn’t all bad. U.S.-Americans sent a message to the alt-right that y’all ain’t gonna keep this country for long. We got a new Star Wars movie (which Shaun says was absolutely kickass). There were some amazing books by old friends, new friends, and folks we haven’t met yet. Heck, 2019 was a year of phenomenal writing of all kinds. Plus, N.K. Jemisin won another Hugo Award (we’re temporarily renaming it the Jemisin is Awesomesauce Award). In a lot of ways, 2018 was a good year.
2018 Awards Season Eligibility: Our Things, Guest Things, All the Things
2017 might not have been the best year for the world, but it was a pretty good year for our little podcast. We added a few new shows, produced a whole lot of great content (thanks to Jen’s diligent work as producer), and brought on a whole lot of new voices. We also got this flashy new website (thanks, Jade!) due to our Patreon supporters being awesome. As we do every year, we like to share all of the awards eligible things created by us, our crew, and our guests. Where relevant, we’ve linked to individual creator’s eligibility posts on their websites. As always, we thank you for taking the time to check out this post and for considering us, our crew, and/or our guests for things in the 2018 awards season (Hugos, Nebulas, and more). Here goes:
