Episode 89 — How to Placate Scifi and Fantasy Authors (Plus Some Silly) w/ Jason Sanford

27 Feb

Jason Sanford returns for a free-form discussion on all kinds of random nonsense.  We cover the hype surrounding J. K. Rowling’s new adult novel, the abuse of Seanan McGuire by readers (and the stupid things publishers do that hurt authors), the power of science fiction, plus a few silly related topics (including an embarrassing moment for Duke, who lives in an alternate universe of plurals).

We hope you enjoy the episode!

Episode 79 — Favoritism (Our 2011 Besties)

19 Dec

Our last non-interview, non-torture episode of the year is all about our favorite books, movies, TV shows, interviews, etc. for the 2011 year.  You can see our lists below, but you’ll want to listen to hear our reasons.

Plus:  we spend a little time saying thank you to everyone who listened and appeared on the show.  Why?  Because we love you.  Obviously.  Show us a little love back by leaving a response to the following questions:

What books, movies, and TV shows were your favorites for 2011 (whether published this year or not)?  Which interviews, roundtables, and Torture Media episodes did you most enjoy?

We hope you enjoy the episode!

Episode 75 — Magical Realism and Book Love w/ Jason Sanford

21 Nov

Jason Sanford returns (are you noticing a trend, yet?) to talk with us about magical realism, interesting (and damn near annoying) news in the SF/F world, and what we want for Christmas.  It’s sure to be a fun ride, if not a little controversial (because Sanford is the Queen of Controversy, after all — or is it King?  We’re not sure, but we do know that he’s got a few things to say about this week’s news.  Emotional things.  From deep down in his heart!).

We hope you enjoy the episode!

Episode 53 — Religion in SF and Why Fantasy is More Popular

13 Jun

The second half of our super special episode is jam packed with skiffy and fanty goodness.  Jason Sanford, John Ottinger, and Adam take part in our discussion of religion in science fiction and why we think fantasy is more popular than science fiction.  More bad jokes are had at Shaun’s expense, but he eventually gets his revenge…

Tune in and enjoy!

Episode 52 — Schizophrenic Computers, Weird News, and Bad Movies

6 Jun

Our super special episode is here.  Half of it, anyway.  Jason Sanford, John Ottinger, and Adam join us for a discussion about the SF/F/H movies coming out in June, some really weird science news, and film adaptations of SF/F books.  A few jokes are had at Shaun’s expense and Inception gets what’s coming to it…

(This episode is half of a much larger recording.  The second half is discussion oriented and is focused on religion in SF/F and our thoughts on why fantasy literature fairs better than science fiction.  I expect that episode to go up on Monday, if not earlier.)

Tune in and enjoy!

The Jason Sanford Nomination Gateway

19 Jan

Remember that fellow we had on the show for episode fourteen?  Well, he’s been kind enough to add us to his list of nominations for the Hugo, Nebula, and Locus awards.  I have no idea if we’re eligible for every award, but it’s really awesome to be considered by someone other than ourselves (you know, because saying “yeah, we so deserve an award” is a tad egotistical, don’t you think?).

But this post isn’t just about us.  It’s also about the stuff he has on his list, which includes numerous novels, short stories, and so on.  You should check it out and let him know what you think of his selections.

P.S.:  We’re very please to see GUD, Interzone, and works by Ted Chiang, Lavie Tidhar, Hannu Rajaniemi, Catherynne Valente, N. K. Jemisin, Nnedi Okorafor, and others on Sanford’s list.  Best of luck to them when the awards come rolling in!  Hopefully Andy Cox will win best editor this year!
